Another in a series of earthquakes as a result of the incident Haiti magnitude of 7 Guatemala today. Several news sources reported that as a big event 6.0, when the USGS earthquake off the coast is classified as a magnitude 5.8. Since the terrible events that shook Haiti, the world has been sharply focused on these almost daily earthquakes. This, and the lighter one magnitude 3.8 occurred Dominican Republic less than two hours. Many others have occurred in Haiti region for several days.
Is all of this is fear of aftershocks is something we ask readers every day. Aftershocks are very common, but from the perspective of an amateur the last few days seem ordinary. Taking a look at the numbers and location of events posted on the USGS website is not only attractive, but a bit like watching a bullet shot. In the last 4 days has occurred not less than 50 seismic events from Argentina to Puerto Rico. Most of Central and South America, including many from the Caribbean, have seen the earthquake activity. Earthquake magnitude is measured from 2.5 to the latest events in Guatemala 5.8 is enough to alarm most people. The figure below reveals little about how the earthquake affected area.
No statement has so far been issued by the USGS or other officials associated with this vibration. We must let the reader know though, and repeat once again, the aftershocks are very common and how they occur is highly dependent on the happening in their area, the intensity of the larger events, and various other factors. Video below briefly explain what happened with plate tectonics and seismic events along what is known as the “ring of fire.” In essence, South America, Nazca, and Caribbean tectonic plates interact with one another – sometimes causing great pressure unimaginable intensity.
