“There is no other island in the Caribbean is as beautiful or as productive,” said Grace Elmore from behind the bar at the Richmond Hill Inn, a colonial scout-cum-eyrie owned by his family since the 1960s. This rises high above Montego Bay Jamaica. “There is so much to see and do: beaches, mountains, rivers, inland areas, swimming, diving and walking. There is a beautiful shopping jewelry, clothing and crafts. The people are friendly. We export bananas, coffee, bauxite, sweet pepper , cucumber, herbs, spices … ”

As Ms. Elmore recited a long list of Jamaican exports, I looked down Montego Bay, below 500ft. Jamaica second city (the capital behind Kingston) is a shambolic affair, with a growing Chinatown in essence and India are busy people – a colorful cosmopolitan and place for everything. And Richmond Hill Inn is probably the best place to see it. Here you can take in all big cities, next to the bay where he got his name and background of spectacular mountains. If you time your visit right, you can also catch the sunset, which in this western part of Jamaica is always a highlight of the day.

“… Cheese, eggs, juice and even wine,” said Elmore. “We can grow almost anything here. The people who eat from the ground. You can not go hungry in Jamaica.” One item Elmore forget to include the export of the island are the people. Jamaica is a major exporter itself. There are approximately 3.5 million live in Jamaica throughout the world – particularly Britain and America. That’s about the same amount of living in Jamaica alone. However, according to Ms. Elmore, they all eventually return.

“Some of them returned from overseas to go bad,” he continued. “The kids pick up Americanisms, music, clothing, rap and technology. This is changing the order of life in Jamaica. Then they started to export drugs, which carry the weapons. Haiti gave us guns for ganja [marijuana]. If only more of Jamaica Usain Bolt will follow. “(The runner who holds the world record came from Trelawny, near Montego Bay.)

The wealth of Jamaica was first built on the sugar. In the 18th century wealth was made from sugar cane in the Caribbean. Jamaica is a regional economic powerhouse. A few miles from Richmond Hill, a former Jamaica evidence sugar rush up in the form of Rose Hall. One of the largest plantations in Jamaica, Rose Hall, owned approximately 6,000 acres to work with 2000 slaves. Large house in Rose Hall is a large and impressive two-story buildings set in manicured field. In the early 18th century, it was one of the 700 houses in Jamaica like that, but for a slave rebellion 1831-1838, 685 homes flattened. Rose Hall was saved because it was feared that the spirit which is called the White Witch of Rose Hall will cast a spell on anyone who touched it.

White Witch is Annie Mae Pattinson, who was born in England but educated in voodoo over the years, spent in Haiti. He moved to the Rose Hall in 1820 when she married the owner, John Rose Palmer. In 11 years, he has seized control of the plantation and killed the first, second and third husbands, as well as countless slaves delivery he had taken as lovers. She met her end when she was strangled in 1831 by a former slave who was angry that Annie had killed his daughter in a big-a jealous love of the game in the book-keeper plantation.

Tourism has overthrown sugar from the number one spot as the biggest earner in Jamaica. Seven miles from Rose Hall is the culmination of Jamaican tourism: Half Moon estate. Half Moon when opened in 1954 as a hotel with 17 cottages and 30 houses on the edge of the crescent sand beach, it was a pioneer of much copied throughout the region. But while most hotel resorts in the Caribbean has been – in my experience – to evolve through a process of improvement and additional improvements, Half Moon has adopted a more megalomanical approach. This has grown larger, while the horizontal spread and absorb their neighbors.

Currently occupy two miles from the beach and 400 hectares of land, it is undeniably an impressive sight. Everywhere you look there are stunning views of colonial-inspired Jamaican plantation white Palladian-style villa, pavilion and tower emerald set in a tropical grass-wild flower beds, achieved through the palm rained down by golf cart. If you like grandeur, this is the Caribbean home-from-home. In addition to British royalty and a number of heads of state who has been examined over the years, John and Jackie Kennedy back here for a month after he won the U.S. election in 1960. (Jackie will, Half Moon, written on note paper, hangs behind the reception – one wonders what prompted her death signal.)

If Half Moon rise early James Bond thriller, you will be right. Not only Ian Fleming wrote all

novel in Jamaica (his house, Goldeneye, near the town of Oracabessa, is now a luxury retreat), but a bungalow at the Half Moon starred as 007 rooms in the fictional island of San Monique voodoo in Live and Let Die. Half Moon now has 398 bedrooms built into the hundreds of villas, cottages and what looks like a miniature palace, serving more than 700 staff. This is less a resort, over the edge of Montego Bay.

If Half Moon continued to grow at current levels, in 200 years it would take over Rose Hall – and when he was denied very good at what he does, I want to see another side of Jamaica.

Restaurants Scotchies only a few miles along the road to Montego Bay, but in everything else that is light years apart from the Half Moon. It is said that the most authentic source of jerk cooking in Jamaica, Scotchies looks like real deal: it was a roadside shack really mediocre, except for a sign painted with “Scotchies”. A very basic open-air restaurant was revealed before you, seem to be nailed together from bits and pieces of wood painted in bright colors. You order at the table and take your choice to go to eat at your desk, like a Jamaican version of McDonald’s.

Jerk is a way of smoking or roasting meats and seafood. This comes from the Taino Indians who preceded the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494, but was perfected by the runaway slave known as Maroons. Fled to the mountains, Maroon preserved pig meat and wild birds by soaking in pimentos, chilies and spices and then smoked it over hot coals sprinkled with water. This has come down from the current asshole. Smoking is the authentic way, but, for the sake of speed, baking will be enough.

There must be a little ceremony about it in Scotchies. Cooked chicken pieces from hoiked plastic washing bowls and stored in a typical side dish accompanying paper: parsnip, sweet potato, banana and dumplings “festival”, a sweet dough formed into a sausage and fried. I have little idea of what it felt like a jerk in my Scotchies since the chicken is almost completely erased by a sinus-clearing chili sauce that I was ill-advisedly applied, but I have a feeling spiciness. There may be the same old roast chicken.

If you drive along the west coast of Montego Bay, you get a glimpse of daily life in Jamaica. Dense tropical vegetation interspersed by a roadside shack, peek-a-boo view of the sea and fishing villages that simple where people listen to reggae while the women do the work. Every few hundred yards, a roadside stall selling coconuts, bananas, apples, and take breadfruit trees from the wild fruit which breed everywhere.

After about 30 miles, I arrived at Negril village, which straddles Westmoreland and Hanover parishes in the west end of Jamaica. I hope I will come more quickly – faster I mean in life. This is the kind of place that makes you forget what brought you here in the first place, and what you have left behind. It makes me feel like a visitor, not the customer, or patron, or a source of cash.

Negril is a sleepy and remote fishing village located in a large arc of pure honey-colored sand when hippies “discovered” in the 1960s, drawn by the isolation, generally fine dry weather, beaches and sunsets. Before long, rainbow-colored cross-cultural Rastafarian-hippy bohemian beach party scene went well. Today, Negril has grown from those halcyon days, but not out of all recognition. In terms of infrastructure, no one talked about. A coastal road divides “Seven-mile beach” (actually just over four miles) from the swamp, the swamp is full of croc-cum-nature reserve. While the hotels have sprung up, you’ll find a high and a little concrete. You can leave your shoes and clothes in the back, appeared on T-shirts and shorts, pour rum and watch others give spectacular day in the west to a soundtrack of reggae beats from every open window.

At the southern end of the Seven-mile beach, outside of nudist colony, the sand gives way to the West End, 30ft high cliffs that plunge into warm, clear water where the dolphins play. This volcanic ridge filled with contradictory points at heights vary, depending on whether you want a simple entry-level full-immersion or special vertigo.

The most popular jumping-off point is Rick’s Cafe, eat, drink and live reggae experience, that Richard “Rick” Hershman was opened in 1974 with the words: “Your body has arrived in which your mind always.” Rick has been packed with the body since then, some with thoughts still attached. Reggae only stopped when hurricanes Gilbert and Ivan blew the place down in 1988 and 2004 respectively.

I met Hector “Birdman”, a professional cliff-jumpers at Rick’s. He jumped from the trees that grow on top of the cliff, giving a horrible 60ft drop. For $ 20 (£ 12), Bird Man jumped to order. Asked about the correct technique, he replied: “Try not to hesitate or you will have a second thought; remain tight, and make sure your legs remain together.” And what’s on your mind when you fall? “How am I going to get the next 20 dollars.”

Rick is open from noon, but it was taken from the 4-jumping and cliff diving dive led to the most amazing of them all around 7 when the western sky became red stove glory. Watching this enlightenment from the cliff when the local food caught conch, lobster or shrimp in some way to add dimension and depth that you do not get from watching the sunset from the beach.

For full immersion in local culture, find yourself in the mood with Magnum Tonic wine mixed with Red Bull. Once you’ve watched the sunset at Rick’s Cafe, the head of Alfred to live reggae on the beach until 11, and finish at the Jungle night club “became very hot” by about 2. There will be an abundance of rum.

In January 1996, a Grumman HU-16 aircraft landed in Negril Jamaica Defense Force while (JDF) has been practicing maneuvers outside the Negril lighthouse. Thinking that the plane was smuggling drugs, JDF and fired up. The plane landed safely perfectly (so much for JDF), and out stepped Chris Blackwell – who succeeded Bob Marley and founded Island Records – Jimmy Buffett, singer and business man who has a chain of Margaritaville bar and restaurant in Jamaica, and Bono of U2.

Blackwell’s Island Outpost hotel group operates Caves resort in Negril, the hotel makes an interesting point of sale such as Gruyère structures in the West End cliffs. Some caves double as a bar, others as a private dining area. 16 rooms in simple huts built with local architectural vernacular. You can throw open the windows (no window) and let the reggae and the sound of the sea.

In addition to Chris Blackwell, the other non-Jamaican who knows all about Negril is Roberta Pryor, graphic designer, hypnotherapist and author of novels published Negril Ah!. Pryor has lived here for 28 years, and running what he called “spiritual theme park” overlooking the sea.

“When I moved from the United States in the 1980s, Negril is a tropical paradise. The hippy-ish people and Jamaica hilarious sense of humor to make it interesting,” he said. “After the Grateful Dead gave a concert in Ocho Rios in the 1980s, for months after that place filled with Dead-head with shoe boxes of psychedelics. Every time the van through immigration, they disappeared into the bushes. Since it, we already have a sewerage system put in – which makes a big difference, but to kill corals. We also have tours, which attract all sorts of people who want to make money, not all with good intentions. Obviously I still love the place, or I would not be here.

“Negril is where you go when you do not want to be around a ton of people,” he said. “You drop your worries and problems and to appreciate how beautiful the world can be.”

After a dismal year bookings and discounts, travel to the Caribbean started to pick up, allowing the resort to be more selective with the sales this year. But it is still possible for tourists to catch a deal, especially if they are higher above the flexible.Prices Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year. But hotels still offer low prices, often in the form of free nights, spa treatments and other facilities.

“We now see the new normal,” said Steve Heydt, president of Elite Island Resorts, which operates hotels upscale in Antigua, the Grenadines and elsewhere. “All the trips have been re-established to offer savings.”

Direct discount, although not difficult to find, which is not so strong as last year, however. The hotel has slashed rates 50 percent or more are now offering savings of only 20 to 30 percent. For example, Elite Island Resorts made a small splash last year when he received a payment in shares, based on the value of pre-bust. This year, it only offers 20 percent of seven-night holidays in January, 10 percent in February and 30 percent in March.

But do not procrastinate. While some islands such as St. Lucia and Aruba welcomes new air service, which usually means cheaper airfares, flights to the Caribbean is still tight, making it difficult to find a seat and supply, particularly on popular dates. When the winter will last, said Mr. Heydt, travelers’ now make reservations to their commitments in the current fear that any transaction can be evaporated in the coming months. ”

LUXURY

High-end hotels do not like the word “agreement.” They prefer euphemisms such as “increased value” or “add a room.” And in Anguilla, known for its luxury resorts and villas, there is no shortage of them. For example, stay four nights at Malliouhana Hotel & Spa, and a variety of facilities including a four-course dinner, four hourlong massages and snorkeling trips; a Getaway Package for two is $ 4995. Or get four nights in a villa with a price of three at CuisinArt Resort & Spa.

Parrot Cay, on a private island in Turks and Caicos, has expanded seven-nights-for-the-price-of-five deal, which was introduced last year when the recession hit. But the higher price – $ 4,650 in January to see the garden-room, up from $ 3875 last year. Even at the popular St. Bart’s, which rarely have a need to discount, the hotel offers incentives. For example, Hôtel Guanahani, the rooms from € 615 (about $ 940, at $ 1.53 to the euro) night, will throw a free car rental for guests who stay six nights or more.

To lower interest rates, check Luxurylink.com, which offers unpublished discounts luxury hotels and villas online auctions and special offers. Site recently offered four bedroom villas at Round Hill in Jamaica – complete with cooks, cleaners, housekeepers and gardeners – to $ 5900 per week, or about $ 845 a night.

There are still vacancies for Christmas elsewhere, but are willing to pay full price. “Any hotelier who has come to our office have said that Christmas is space available,” said June Sloane, a luxury travel specialist at Sue Brown Travel in Boca Raton, Fla. “But they will not give it.”

ON THE CHEAP

If the beach bargain is all you care about, consider Grenada, St. Maarten or the United States Virgin Islands, which all goes islandwide campaign that includes an extra hotel nights, discounted loans and expenditures for the island and tourist attractions.

VisitJamaica.com, which is run by the Jamaica Tourist Board, a list of hotel discounts ranging from 40 percent at the Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort in Montego Bay, until 60 percent of Beaches Sandy Bay in Negril. To avoid the tourist strip, head to Jake’s in Treasure Beach, on the southwestern coast, which offers a fifth night free through December 18 with 5NTFREE code.

It is also possible to blend in with the elite less. Anguilla may have some of the most expensive resorts in the Caribbean, but you can stay at a small inn less and still hit the best beaches. It’s 33 coastal islands, including combing the fine sand in front of the fanciest resorts, all open to the public. Sydans Apartments & Villas in the village of Sandy Ground has winter rates from $ 95 night for basic room with kitchen. La Vue, a bed-and-breakfast in South Hill, has 17 rooms, with prices ranging from $ 90 night.

FAMILY

Affordable lodging is only one consideration for the family planning Caribbean vacations. Other child-friendly foods, especially for picky eaters. And unless your kids are content to play in the sand all week, various activities in order. That’s probably why many families turn to the all-inclusive resorts, which usually offers several restaurants, adult-friendly offerings such as spa or casinos, and enough activities that deplete even the most energetic child.

Freedom Travel, travel agency chain based in Ramsey, NJ, offers a variety of all-inclusive specials include 55 percent off at Dreams Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, which has seven restaurants, a large free form pool and daily activities of children. The price, which includes airfare from New York, ranging from $ 655 person for four nights stay if booked by November 30. All-inclusive Almond Casuarina in Barbados is 50 percent until December 20; night four packages, which includes airfare from New York, starting at $ 979 people.

Atlantis in the Bahamas offers a two night stay for as low as $ 199 which includes golf night and into the water park resorts. The deal, which must be booked by the end of November, it is good to stay through December 16.

CRUISES

Once the cruise for $ 100 per person per day is good. Now, $ 75 per day is unusual.

This year, a space in the seven-night Caribbean average cost of about $ 520, according to Surecruise.com, cruise agent online. But more discounts are available for travelers who act quickly. Last week, Royal Caribbean has a one-day sale at night southern Caribbean, eight in November for a $ 199 extraordinary people, not including taxes and fees. Norway has a seven-night western Caribbean cruises in November and December ranging from $ 299 person.

Interestingly, some of the most interesting deals this winter are offered on new ships. CruiseCritic.com / bargains list seven nights western Caribbean cruise on Crown Princess three years for $ 479 and the popular Norwegian Jewel for $ 329. Both left in January.
