At St. John’s Caneel Bay Resort (caneelbay.com), standard rooms start at $ 395 in summer; the same room with sea view running $ 550. Taxes and service fees, the price difference to stay for a week is $ 1280.

In each instance you will be traveling with fellow guests and rubbing shoulders with the locals – plus you’ll streamline your carbon.

7. Cheap (er) grub and booze. Costs could eat into the wallet thief in the Caribbean. This should not surprise: Many of the island imported a lot of food consumed in the resort, and price make the leap after last year’s fuel crisis.

But some islands have cheaper food options, especially by producing more fruits and vegetables, meat and fish products. You’ll find an array of excellent restaurants fairly priced in Mexico, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, especially if you are ordering you to focus on local specialties than for nonnative cuisine.

Take one step further by forsaking wine, scotch and other liquor imports, which are all affected by the cost of a large and powerful job. In contrast, drinking local rum and beer, or tequila while in Mexico.

8. Consider the hidden costs. Do not forget to calculate the cost of local taxes, resort fee, fuel surcharge and departure tax to your overall holiday price. This is different in each island, but the coins and dimes can add up.

For example, there is no departure tax when you check in for flights in Puerto Rico or the United States Virgin Islands. In St Lucia $ 26 taxes included in your airfare costs, such as a $ 29 tax in Bermuda and $ 30 in St. Maarten – you pay, but at least the cost up front. But you must order $ 30 to pay for arrival and departure taxes in the Dominican Republic, $ 32 at check-in for Bonaire, and $ 39 in Belize.

Even tax and tip in a restaurant varies substantially. By minimizing waste and overhead, all-inclusive resorts benefit from efficiencies of scale – savings are passed on to the guest. And all-inclusive hotels are very good for those who love to enjoy a drink and a restaurant.

There are well-known international chain such as Riu and Club Med, but it’s worth checking a few options locally owned. Jolly Beach Resort & Spa on the island of Antigua has winter rates in standard rooms at $ 392 for two people, all-inclusive (and including tax / service). This winter, “Escape Now” specifically took 25 percent of that rate and get a free upgrade to superior rooms, to equalize per-person registration for $ 147 per night (jollybeachresort.com).

10. It takes a villa. Renting a villa offers a way to savings. A villa is usually comes with a kitchen where you can prepare some of your food. Do not want to think about cooking? In Jamaica, most of the villas come with a permanent staff – housekeeper, gardener, cook. Five-bedroom cliff cottage, handled through Jamaica Villas by Linda Smith (jamaicavillas.com) has a large pool and membership to the facility near Round Hill; in the summer house rents for $ 4500 per week, which works out to $ 129 per night per bedroom ($ 6000 winter). You should budget about $ 50 per person for food daily, and 10 to 15 percent of rental costs for staff per cent, but you’ll still be out in front compared to the same resort.
